Shopify has created a highly advanced and effective retail platform using various components. This platform has been continuously developed, improved, and expanded for nearly 20 years and currently supports a significant portion of US eCommerce. It has processed an impressive amount of money, exceeding half a trillion dollars. In addition to providing a reliable foundation for businesses, Shopify enables them to manage their brand, customer interactions, and data fully. The company is now extending the use of its infrastructure to large retailers through the introduction of Commerce Components by Shopify (CCS), a modern and adaptable solution for enterprise retail.

Commerce Components by Shopify (CCS) is a flexible and customizable platform designed for enterprise retailers, typically companies with high annual sales figures ranging from $500 million to multiple billions of dollars. This platform allows these retailers to seamlessly integrate various components from Shopify into their existing systems. This marks the first time that major retailers around the world have had access to Shopify's component infrastructure.

What does Commerce Components by Shopify (CCS) offer to retailers?

CCS offers a range of tools for retailers, including online checkout and customizable APIs for creating a cohesive customer experience that integrates with a company's preferred back-office services. It also includes a new back-end management infrastructure tailored explicitly for enterprise users, as well as Shopify's extensive global infrastructure with over 275 network edge points.

Participating retailers also receive access to a dedicated account team with solutions architects and a priority 24/7 specialized support team.

Unmatched flexibility

Now with no rate limits, flexible APIs allow brands to incorporate their existing services with Shopify's modular components. As a result, retailers can build exceptional customer experiences for any device. Enterprise retailers can take the necessary components and leave what they don't. Developers are free to build with any front-end framework they choose.

Tap into the unmatched global scale

CCS unlocks more than 100 million existing Shop Pay customers who have opted in for Shopify's one-click checkout. In addition, Shopify's globally scaled infrastructure with global network edge points allows storefronts to be accessible no matter where customers are.

Mattel, a well-known American brand, will be among the first enterprise retailers to utilize Commerce Components by Shopify, enabling them to bring their entire portfolio of brands to the platform. “Innovation is at the heart of Mattel,” said Sven Gerjets, CTO of Mattel. “We first worked with Shopify on a project called Mattel Creations, a platform for creators to reimagine the most iconic toys in the world. Creations empowered Mattel to move quickly, meet our customers where they are, and most importantly, leverage Shopify's infrastructure to scale globally. It was hugely successful, and we're excited to transform our brand offerings using Commerce Components.”

As Shopify has developed and added more tools for retailers of all sizes, it has also undergone some changes in terms of its workforce and business structure. In July, the company reported a net loss of $1.2 billion for Q2 and announced plans to let go of 10% of its employees due to COVID-19's impact on ecommerce projections. In August, Shopify invested $100 million in the ecommerce automation company Klaviyo, forming a strategic partnership. As part of this partnership, Klaviyo became the email solutions provider for Shopify Plus, a service for merchants with high volume sales.

What does CCS mean for businesses?

Today's enterprise retailers encounter multiple challenges on numerous fronts. This includes the rapid pace of tech growth and economic uncertainty, which impacts their ability to prepare for future investment. In addition, shifting customer anticipations means they must achieve real-time innovation to remain at the top of their ball game. To achieve that, they need an all-in-one solution that prioritizes customization with the flexibility to integrate and innovate without constraints. At the same time, it must utilize trusted infrastructure components that help its teams move quicker. These elements together are non-negotiable. The challenge for enterprise brands has been finding solutions that facilitate this vision. According to Shopify, the answer is now here with the launch of Commerce Components by Shopify (CCS).
